Former Australia head coach and the newly appointed head coach of Lucknow Super Giants, Justin Langer, has lauded the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a spectacular tournament, drawing parallels to the Olympic Games. Langer, known for his no-nonsense coaching approach, views every IPL game as a spectacle, emphasizing its global popularity and competitiveness.
“The IPL is like the Olympic Games. It is so big. Every game is a spectacle, it is so well received, it is so well supported, not just at the stadiums, all through India and around the world. To have the opportunity to be a part of that is something I am very, very excited about,”
Expressing his excitement about joining the IPL, Langer has engaged in discussions about the tournament with cricketing stalwarts Ricky Ponting and Tom Moody. Ponting shared his IPL experiences, having been associated with Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, while Moody, one of Langer’s closest friends, has been extensively involved in the IPL.
In a video, Langer said,
“Having sat with Ricky for so long and he talked about his time with the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. How much he loves the tournament. And Tom Moody, one of my best friends, he’s been so involved in the IPL and just to hear them talking about it,”
Langer’s coaching journey includes leading the Australian side post the Sandpaper Gate controversy, earning back the trust of the public, and securing a T20 World Cup victory in 2021. Despite a successful Ashes campaign, Langer’s departure marked a significant change in the Australian coaching setup, with Andrew McDonald taking charge, leading to victories in the WTC 2023 and the ODI World Cup.
Langer’s appreciation for the IPL underlines its stature in the cricketing world, and the Lucknow Super Giants anticipate his leadership to add depth to their campaign in the upcoming IPL season. As Langer brings his wealth of experience with top cricketing nations to the IPL, fans eagerly await the spectacle that the tournament promises under his guidance.
