Is Mitchell Starc retiring from ODIs?

In a spectacular conclusion to the IPL 2024 season, Mitchell Starc’s remarkable turnaround played a pivotal role in Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) triumphant campaign. Purchased for a record-breaking INR 24.75 crore, Starc faced immense pressure due to his high price tag. His initial performances were far from impressive, leaking 100 runs without taking a wicket in his first two matches. Despite a rocky start, Starc, who had previously played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2015, found his rhythm as the season progressed.

In the crucial Qualifier 1 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Starc delivered a standout performance, taking 3/34 and earning the Man of the Match award. He maintained this momentum in the final, securing 2/14 and helping KKR to an emphatic eight-wicket victory over SRH. Venkatesh Iyer’s unbeaten 52 off 26 balls and his 92-run partnership with Rahmanullah Gurbaz ensured a smooth chase of SRH’s modest total of 113 runs, sealing KKR’s third IPL title.

After performing in IPL, he has hinted at retiring from ODIs. Reflecting on his journey, the pacer highlighted his commitment to Australian cricket over the past nine years. “I’ve prioritised Australian cricket. I’ve given myself a chance to give my body a break and spend some time away from cricket with my wife as well, so that’s certainly been where my head’s been for the last nine years,” stated Starc at the post-match press conference.

Mitchell Starc is retiring from ODIs

Starc hinted at the possibility of nearing the end of his career and dropping one format of the game.

“Moving forward…look, I am certainly closer to the end of my career than the start. One format may drop off. There’s a long time before the next one-day World Cup and whether that format continues for me or not, it may open doors for more franchise cricket,” he shared.

This statement aligns with speculations about Mitchell Starc retiring from ODIs, suggesting he might skip the 2027 50-over World Cup to focus more on franchise cricket. He emphasized that participating in the IPL provided excellent preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this season. It’s been great, it leads into the World Cup, that’s the other side of the benefit of being here against some amazing players in an amazing tournament. It’s a great lead-up to a World Cup,” added Starc.
