The ICC Champions Trophy is going to make a comeback after an eight-year hiatus, with the hosting of this prestigious event decided to take place in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9, 2024. But the participation of India will depend on government permission. Jay Shah, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, made it clear to the Times of India in an interview recently, saying that no final decision had been taken so far on India’s visit to Pakistan.

Shah emphasized that the BCCI has not yet taken a stand on the issue, and a decision shall be taken when the event comes nearer. This statement comes amid ongoing speculation and discussion on what India’s participation in the tournament would mean, given strained relations between the two neighboring countries.

“No decision has been finalised yet,” he said.

“No stand as of now. We will cross the bridge when it comes,” he added.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has suggested that all the matches of India should be hosted in Lahore and the rest be divided between Karachi and Rawalpindi. As this event is approaching, the PCB has already decided to provide Rs 12.80 billion for the renovation of three mega stadiums: Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore; National Bank Cricket Arena, Karachi; and Rawalpindi International Cricket Stadium.

If India confirms its participation, the ICC Champions Trophy is expected to include eight teams. The 2017 edition of the event saw Pakistan defeat India in the final. Hence, India’s potential return to Pakistan for the 2024 event will add another dimension to that tournament. The final call on India’s participation in the tournament could have wider implications for cricketing relations between the two nations.
