With the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) on the horizon, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have made a significant move by signing Sri Lankan pacer Dushmantha Chameera for the upcoming season. Chameera’s acquisition comes as a replacement for Gus Atkinson, who has withdrawn from the tournament due to workload management concerns by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
Atkinson, who was secured by KKR for INR 1 crore during the IPL 2024 auction in December 2023, has been a part of England’s recent cricketing endeavors, featuring in the World Cup matches held in India and later joining the squad for a white-ball tour in the Caribbean. However, considering his commitments and workload, Atkinson opted out of the IPL, providing an opportunity for Chameera to join KKR.
Chameera, who remained unsold during the auction, will now represent KKR at his base price of INR 50 lakhs. The Sri Lankan speedster brings with him a wealth of experience, having previously played for IPL franchises such as Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Lucknow Super Giants. Additionally, he showcased his skills in the recently concluded ILT20 for Dubai Capitals, where he made an impact by securing two wickets against Abu Dhabi Knight Riders.
Meanwhile, the commencement of IPL 2024 is anticipated to take place on March 22, although an official confirmation is pending. The finalization of the IPL schedule hinges upon the announcement of polling dates for India’s general elections, as the tournament organizers aim to avoid any scheduling conflicts with the national electoral process.
As the countdown to IPL 2024 begins, KKR’s decision to bring in Chameera adds depth to their bowling lineup, setting the stage for an exhilarating season ahead.
