Lucknow franchise to be known as UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL)

The owners of the Lucknow franchise of the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) announced today that their team will be called UP Warriorz.

UP Warriorz, the Lucknow franchise team of the WPL, was bought by Capri Global Holdings at an auction hosted by The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a whopping price of INR 757 Crore.

Along with the name, the owners of the team have also announced the coaching members of the team.

The owners have appointed former England cricketer Jon Lewis as the head coach of the team with Anju Jain being the assistant coach of the team.

Former Australian cricketer Ashley Noffke will be leading the bowling coaching panel while Lisa Sthalekar will be mentoring the team.

In a statement issued by the franchise, the head coach of the team Jon Lewis said:

I am delighted to be part of the Capri Global Holdings Private Limited family with the UP Warriorz and expect this to be a fascinating insight into the depth of cricket in India and a high-octane ride for the next couple of months.

The WPL is a huge step forward for women’s cricket globally and I am excited to be an integral part of this journey. Having Anuj Jain, Ashley Noffke and Lisa Sthalekar who bring in a diverse set of experiences to the dugout can only make the task a whole lot easier.

The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is all set to start on 4 March 2023 with the Player Auction to be held in Mumbai on 13 February 2023 (details).
