The Northern Superchargers have confirmed the signings of Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim for the upcoming 2025 edition of The Hundred, marking a significant breakthrough for Pakistani representation in this year’s competition.
The seasoned duo are the first Pakistan cricketers to be contracted for the tournament after a wave of speculation around their participation amid shifting dynamics within the league.
Amir Replaces Dwarshuis, Imad Steps in for Santner
Mohammad Amir has been brought in to replace Australian left-arm seamer Ben Dwarshuis, who has withdrawn from the tournament due to international duties. Meanwhile, Imad Wasim fills the void left by New Zealand allrounder Mitchell Santner, who will miss the opening matches of the campaign.
Their presence brings a wealth of experience in white-ball cricket and adds balance to a Superchargers squad looking to improve on their past performances in the 100-ball format.
Political Concerns Brushed Aside
The announcement ends months of uncertainty about Pakistani participation in The Hundred 2025, especially following the league’s recent shift in ownership structure. From October 1, the Sun Group, an Indian conglomerate, will assume operational control of the Northern Superchargers.
Earlier this year, no Pakistani players were selected during the March draft, fueling concerns about potential political bias or conflicts of interest due to Indian stakeholders now owning six of the eight franchises.
However, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) dismissed any such notion, reiterating that Pakistani players remain fully eligible for selection. Most experts agree that scheduling conflicts and last-minute withdrawals in 2024 likely influenced the draft outcomes more than any political undertones.
Boost for the Superchargers
With Pakistan scheduled for a white-ball tour of the West Indies followed by a UAE tri-series during the draft window, player availability was a valid concern. Add to that Pakistan’s recent T20I struggles, and it’s easy to see why selections were delayed.
Now with Amir’s death-bowling prowess and Imad’s all-round stability, the Superchargers gain two match-winners capable of turning the tide in tight contests. Both players are proven performers in global franchise leagues and bring invaluable tactical insight to the squad.
Their inclusion not only lifts the team’s chances but also paves the way for further Pakistani representation in The Hundred’s evolving landscape.
