Mujeeb Ur Rahman, the Afghan cricketer, will be absent from Melbourne Renegades’ upcoming BBL game against Melbourne Stars due to changes in his No-Objection Certificate (NOC) conditions. Alongside Naveen-ul-Haq and Fazalhaq Farooqi, Mujeeb faced sanctions from the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) for opting out of the central contracts list for 2024. The sanctions include a two-year ban on NOCs for T20 leagues and the revocation of any existing NOCs for Mujeeb, Naveen, and Farooqi.
Initially, Melbourne Renegades expressed unawareness of any change in Mujeeb’s availability, pledging support throughout the BBL season. However, a subsequent statement clarified that Mujeeb has been removed from the squad due to alterations in his NOC conditions, rendering him unavailable for the upcoming match against Melbourne Stars.
While Naveen-ul-Haq and Fazalhaq Farooqi approached the ACB, showcasing a strong desire to represent Afghanistan again, Mujeeb did not find a place in Afghanistan’s T20I squad for the series against UAE despite their return. Mujeeb’s last international appearance was in the ODI World Cup.
Notably, Mujeeb played a pivotal role in Melbourne Renegades’ first and only win of the BBL season, taking 3 for 20 against Adelaide Strikers on December 29. As Afghanistan engages in a three-match T20I series against UAE, winning the first T20I but facing a loss in the second, the absence of Mujeeb raises questions about the impact of the sanctions on player availability.
