Usain Bolt, the legendary sprinter, made a momentous visit to the Nassau County International Stadium in New York on Wednesday, ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Accompanied by esteemed cricketers like Sir Curtly Ambrose, Shoaib Malik, and Liam Plunkett, as well as local sports icons including John Starks, Elena Delle Donne, Bartolo Colon, Victor Cruz, and Ibtihaj Muhammad, Bolt’s presence added a thrilling dimension to the occasion.

Together, the stars left their mark by signing a giant cricket bat, symbolizing unity and anticipation for the upcoming T20 World Cup matches set to grace the stadium between June 3-12. This monumental event not only celebrates the sport’s global appeal but also marks a historic moment as cricket takes center stage in the United States.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Bolt shared, “Coming from the Caribbean where cricket is a part of life, I’m very excited to be part of the T20 World Cup coming to the USA for the first time, co-hosting with the West Indies.” He further emphasized the potential of this event in paving the way for cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 LA Olympics.

Bolt’s excitement was echoed by T20 USA Inc CEO Brett Jones, who hailed the stadium’s unveiling as a “fantastic celebration.” Jones lauded the presence of Bolt and the New York sports stars, recognizing their role in elevating the event’s significance. He also highlighted the positive response from cricketing legends like Ambrose and Malik, emphasizing the stadium’s ability to captivate both players and fans alike.

With a capacity of 34,000, the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium stands as a testament to innovation, being the first modular cricket stadium in the world. Constructed within a remarkable timeframe from January to May 2024, its completion signifies a new era for cricket in the USA. Jones remarked that the event provided a glimpse into the electric atmosphere fans can anticipate during the T20 World Cup matches.

“Today was a fantastic celebration, showcasing a truly out of this world stadium,” said Jones. “Having Usain and a host of New York sports stars and Olympic legends to experience it was fantastic and a fitting welcome to cricket in the USA,” T20 USA Inc CEO Brett Jones said. 

“Having Curtley Ambrose, Liam Plunkett, Shoaib Malik, Corey Anderson and Monak Patel here and seeing their response to the stadium and the playing surface was also pretty special. It gives us a real sense of what the fans can expect next month.”
