In the opening match of the highly anticipated five-match T20I series between Pakistan and New Zealand at Eden Park on Friday, the home side emerged victorious, securing a convincing 46-run win over the visitors. Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Pakistan found themselves on the back foot as New Zealand posted an imposing total of 226/8.

The New Zealand innings was anchored by stellar performances from Kane Williamson, who contributed 57 runs, and Daryl Mitchell, who played a crucial knock of 61. Despite the efforts of Pakistan’s new T20I skipper, Shaheen Shah Afridi, who took three wickets but was expensive with an economy of 11.50 in his four overs, the Pakistani bowling attack struggled to contain the Kiwi batsmen.

Aamir Jamal and Usama Mir failed to make an impact, conceding 55 and 51 runs respectively without taking any wickets. Abbas Afridi and Haris Rauf managed to pick up three and two wickets each, but they were unable to prevent New Zealand from setting a formidable target.

In response, Pakistan’s opening batsmen showed promise, with Saim Ayub providing an explosive start with 27 runs off 8 balls. However, a run-out by Adam Milne halted his momentum. Mohammad Rizwan contributed 25 runs off 14 balls, but the star of the innings was Babar Azam, who scored a valiant 57 off 35 deliveries. Despite his efforts, Pakistan’s batting lineup collapsed, reaching a total of 180.

Tim Southee emerged as the standout performer for New Zealand, claiming four wickets while conceding only 25 runs. Adam Milne and Ben Sears supported him well, taking two wickets each. Ish Sodhi also chipped in with a wicket at an economy of 11 in his four overs.

The comprehensive victory for New Zealand sets the stage for an exciting second T20I clash scheduled for January 14th, Sunday. Pakistan will be eager to bounce back and level the series, while New Zealand aim to maintain their dominance on home soil.
