The Paarl Royals showcased their dominance in SA20 Season 3, securing a hard-fought five-wicket victory over Durban’s Super Giants (DSG) at Kingsmead on Thursday evening. This win solidified their position at the top of the table with 20 points, putting them within striking distance of becoming the first team to qualify for the playoffs. Meanwhile, DSG remains at the bottom with just 8 points, facing an uphill battle to stay in contention.
Royals’ Bowling Masterclass
The evening saw a captivating duel between Afghanistan’s mystery spinners. The Royals’ Mujeeb-ur-Rahman delivered yet another brilliant spell, claiming 2/23 to restrict DSG to 142/7.
DSG had a promising start, thanks to an explosive 62-run opening stand between Quinton de Kock (43) and Matthew Breetzke (25). Promoted to open, de Kock looked in fine form but was dismissed by Mujeeb just as he was gaining momentum. Mujeeb struck again, removing the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen for just 2, tightening the screws during the middle overs.
Despite a rebuilding effort by Wiaan Mulder (24) and Jon-Jon Smuts (32), the Royals maintained control, denying the Super Giants any real chance to accelerate in the death overs.
Royals’ Chase: Hermann and Van Buuren Steal the Show
Chasing 143, the Royals had to overcome an early blow as Joe Root fell cheaply. However, the rising star Lhuan-dre Pretorius continued his fine form with a rapid 25 off 13 balls, keeping the Royals on track.
The highlight of the innings was Rubin Hermann, who delivered a stunning 44 off just 22 balls, including four boundaries and three towering sixes. Hermann’s aggressive knock dismantled DSG’s hopes, though his innings came to an end with a spectacular delivery from Noor Ahmad, regarded as one of the best balls of the tournament.
While Noor Ahmad (1/25) showcased his class, it wasn’t enough to stop the Royals. Mitchell van Buuren played a calm and composed innings, scoring an unbeaten 44 to guide his team to victory with five wickets in hand.

Paarl Royals captain expressed satisfaction, stating, “The team is gelling well, and contributions are coming from all departments. Rubin Hermann and Mujeeb were exceptional tonight.”
Meanwhile, DSG captain Rilee Rossouw admitted disappointment, saying, “We started well but couldn’t capitalize in the middle overs. We need to regroup quickly and fight hard in the remaining games.”
