Heather Knight, the dynamic captain of the England Women’s cricket team, is buzzing with anticipation for the upcoming bilateral series against Pakistan. After an eight-year hiatus, Pakistan will be touring England for a six-match contest, featuring three T20 Internationals followed by three One Day Internationals.

Knight acknowledges that Pakistan is a force to be reckoned with, citing their recent impressive performances. “We are expecting a tough match against them,” she said. Pakistan’s new captain, Nida Dar, along with their consistent performers and a string of recent victories, have put England on high alert. “They’ve had some really good results recently so it won’t be easy at all,” Knight added, emphasizing the competitive spirit she expects.

Beyond the team’s overall strength, Knight highlights a rising star to watch: Fatima Sana. “Fatima is a great kid,” Knight beams, commending Sana’s energy, enthusiasm, and developing bowling skills. “She’s certainly one to watch,” she concludes, recognizing Sana’s budding talent and dedication to the game.

This series holds a special significance for Knight, who thoroughly enjoys interacting with the Pakistani players. “I really get on with the girls in the Pakistan team,” she shares, mentioning her bond with Sana and the new captain, Nida Dar. “I always enjoy chatting with those girls and hearing what their life is like and how cricket is for them in their country,” Knight expresses her genuine interest in their experiences.

While Pakistan has toured England previously, the reciprocal visit hasn’t materialized yet. The planned series in 2021 was unfortunately called off due to security concerns. However, Knight remains hopeful for a future tour to Pakistan. “I’d love to go,” she admits, though it’s not currently on the official schedule.

“Few of our girls went to the PSL and played in it,” she continues, referencing England players like Danni Wyatt and Tammy Beaumont, “and they said it was a brilliant experience.” Knight’s enthusiasm for visiting Pakistan is evident, fueled by positive experiences of her teammates and the country’s reputed beauty.

Interestingly, Knight reveals her all-time favorite Pakistani cricketer is none other than the legendary Wasim Akram. This admiration for Pakistani cricket adds another layer to the upcoming series, fostering a spirit of mutual respect and healthy competition.

The first match of the series will be played at Edgbaston Stadium on May 11, 2024. Knight anticipates strong support, especially from the vibrant Pakistani community in Birmingham.

“Hopefully the support will be really good for both teams,” she shared.

This series comes amidst a significant development in English women’s cricket. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recently announced a new three-tier first-class system for the domestic structure. Knight believes this revamped structure will create equal opportunities for aspiring female cricketers.

With a revamped domestic structure fueling their growth and a competitive series against a resurgent Pakistan on the horizon, the future of England Women’s cricket appears bright. Knight’s leadership, combined with the team’s dedication and the upcoming exciting series, promise a thrilling chapter in the ongoing saga of women’s cricket.
