Pakistan has unveiled its leadership choices for the upcoming white-ball series against New Zealand, with Salman Ali Agha taking charge as T20I captain and Shadab Khan stepping in as his deputy. This decision is part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to prepare for the ACC Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
The five-match T20I series, set to take place from 16 to 26 March, will serve as a testing ground for Salman, who previously led Pakistan to a 2-1 series victory against Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, Mohammad Rizwan remains at the helm of the ODI squad, with Salman as his vice-captain. The three ODIs are scheduled from 29 March to 5 April.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has placed its faith in fresh talent, selecting three uncapped players—Abdul Samad, Hasan Nawaz, and Mohammad Ali—for the T20I squad. Akif Javed and Mohammad Ali have also been included in the ODI setup, rewarding their impressive domestic performances. However, key openers Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub will miss out due to injuries, with both expected to regain fitness ahead of the Pakistan Super League 10 in April.
Pakistan complete squads for series against New Zealand
Aqib Javed will continue as interim head coach during the New Zealand tour, extending his tenure beyond the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Meanwhile, former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Yousuf has been appointed as the batting coach.
Pakistan’s packed schedule over the next year underscores its commitment to preparing a strong squad for the T20 World Cup. The team will compete in multiple bilateral series, including tours to the West Indies, Afghanistan, Ireland, and Australia. Additionally, the ODI team, led by Rizwan, has its sights set on the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
With a blend of experience and emerging talent, Pakistan’s squad is gearing up for an intense cricketing season, beginning with the challenge against New Zealand.
