Cricket South Africa has officially unveiled the Proteas Women’s squad for their pivotal white-ball tour of the West Indies, featuring three ODIs and three T20Is scheduled from 11 to 23 June 2025 at the Three Ws Oval in Barbados.
The tour marks a significant milestone in South Africa’s preparations for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, as selectors look to fine-tune combinations and inject fresh energy into the setup.
Kapp Headlines Key Inclusions
Among the notable selections, the return of veteran Marizanne Kapp stands out. Following a structured conditioning program, the all-rounder is set to bolster both the batting and bowling departments with her experience and game-changing ability.
She is joined by returning pace duo Tumi Sekhukhune and Ayanda Hlubi, both of whom re-enter the national fold after missing the recent ODI Tri-Series against Sri Lanka and India.
The trio replaces Seshnie Naidu and Lara Goodall, signaling a clear shift in strategy as the team recalibrates for upcoming challenges.
Miané Smit Poised for T20I Debut
One of the tour’s most exciting narratives is the potential T20I debut of Miané Smit. Having already earned her ODI cap, the young all-rounder will now look to showcase her skills in the shortest format. Her inclusion reflects the team’s ongoing investment in nurturing emerging talent alongside seasoned campaigners.
Tour Significance: A Litmus Test Before the World Cup
The ODI series, set for 11, 14, and 17 June, is particularly crucial as it will serve as a direct build-up to the 2025 50-over World Cup. With limited ODI fixtures remaining before the global event, each match carries strategic weight.
The T20Is on 20, 22, and 23 June will also be significant, marking head coach Mandla Mashimbyi’s first series in the shortest format since his appointment late last year. It offers a dual opportunity: to test player adaptability and to begin shaping a competitive T20 unit ahead of next year’s ICC events.
Coach Mashimbyi on the Road Ahead
Mashimbyi expressed both enthusiasm and caution as he prepares for his maiden T20I assignment.
“It’s an exciting white-ball tour in the Caribbean, and a fantastic opportunity for the players to test their limits. The return of key players like Marizanne and the emergence of young talent like Miané adds vital balance to our squad,” he said.
He also noted the learnings from the Sri Lanka series, emphasizing that the team has been working hard to address identified gaps.
“Sri Lanka was a tough tour, but we took positives from it. Our focus now is on building momentum and fine-tuning ahead of a massive year for women’s cricket,” added Mashimbyi.
Selection Strategy: Balance and Vision
Clinton du Preez, Convenor of Selectors, echoed the head coach’s sentiments, highlighting the mix of youth and experience as intentional.
“As we continue building towards the 50-over World Cup, this tour is key to assessing combinations and providing opportunities. We’re encouraged by the batting group’s growth in Sri Lanka and believe the addition of pace options will diversify our bowling tactics in West Indian conditions,” du Preez explained.
