PSL 9: Pakistanis Boycott Their Own Premier T20 League

The Pakistan Super League (PSL 9) kicks off today, February 17th, 2024, in Lahore, but a cloud of controversy hangs over the tournament due to its partnership with KFC. The #BoycottPSL hashtag is trending on Twitter, with many users expressing their discontent over the league’s association with a brand they perceive as supporting the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The boycott movement stems from the belief that Yum! Brands, the parent company of KFC, and its subsidiaries have supported the Israeli military through donations and free food programs. This perception, coupled with strong pro-Palestinian sentiment in Pakistan, has led to calls for fans and players to boycott PSL 9.

It’s crucial to note that the boycott primarily targets Yum! Brands, which also owns Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and The Habit Burger Grill. KFC Pakistan operates as a franchise under Yum! Brands, however, is not directly involved in the alleged support for the Israeli military.

Despite this distinction, the association with KFC has angered many. The argument remains that by accepting Yum! Brands as a sponsor, the PSL indirectly supports their alleged actions. Several prominent figures, including cricketers, have urged the league to reconsider the partnership.

However, PSL organizers are yet to defend their decision, maintaining that the deal was signed with KFC Pakistan, a separate entity. They have also signed sponsors like TikTok, Osaka Batteries, and Tapal Danedar, emphasizing the diverse sponsorships supporting the league.

Meanwhile, the first match between Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars takes place today, igniting excitement amongst many fans. It remains to be seen how the #BoycottPSL movement will impact the tournament’s overall viewership and reception.
