The Rajasthan Royals have announced the return of legendary Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid as Head Coach on a multi-year contract. Dravid, who recently led India to victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, will take up the role immediately. This marks his return to the franchise after nine years, having previously served as both captain and coach from 2011 to 2015.
Dravid, now 51, is widely regarded as one of India’s greatest cricketers. He began his coaching journey with the Royals in 2014 and has since held various coaching roles, including head coach of the Indian Men’s U19 team and the senior Indian national team. Under his leadership, India achieved top rankings in all formats and secured the T20 World Cup trophy earlier this year.
Jake Lush McCrum, Chief Executive Officer of the Royals Sports Group, expressed his excitement:
“We are delighted to bring Rahul back. His coaching abilities are clear from the transformation he’s driven in Indian cricket. He has a deep connection to the franchise, and his ability to work with young and experienced talent aligns perfectly with our goals.”
Dravid will work closely with Kumar Sangakkara, the franchise’s Director of Cricket, to shape the team’s strategy ahead of the IPL retention and auction. Dravid is eager to take on this new challenge, stating:
“I am pleased to be returning to the franchise I have called ‘home’ in the past. It’s the perfect time for me to take on another challenge with the Royals, and I’m excited to help take this team to the next level.”
Manoj Badale, Lead Owner of Rajasthan Royals, welcomed Dravid back:
“Rahul has a long and deep history with the Royals. His return will accelerate our progress and provide a boost to the players and fans alike.”
Kumar Sangakkara, who led the Royals as Head Coach for the past four seasons, praised Dravid’s coaching abilities:
“Rahul’s achievements as a coach are extraordinary. His ability to nurture talent and enable consistent performance will help the Royals challenge for the title.”
With Rahul Dravid back at the helm, the Rajasthan Royals are looking forward to an exciting future, aiming to build on their recent successes and push for more IPL titles.
