Rohit Sharma reveals retirement plans after Champions Trophy win

In a resounding declaration of intent, Rohit Sharma has put an end to speculation about his ODI retirement, confirming he has no such plans after steering India to a triumphant Champions Trophy victory. The Indian skipper, who led his team to a four-wicket win against New Zealand in the final, clarified his stance at the post-match press conference.

“I’m not retiring from this format. Just making sure no rumours are spread going forward,” Rohit stated firmly, putting to rest any uncertainties about his future in 50-over cricket.

No Set Plans, Just Winning Ways

When asked about his long-term vision in the format, Rohit played it cool, stating there was no specific roadmap beyond maintaining India’s winning momentum. “What is happening will keep happening,” he said, emphasizing that the team’s immediate focus was to continue delivering strong performances rather than worrying about distant plans.

His leadership has been instrumental in India’s dominance on the world stage. This victory marks his second major ICC triumph in quick succession, following the T20 World Cup win in June 2024. While he bid farewell to T20Is after that milestone, he remains committed to ODI cricket, where he continues to be a pivotal force.

A Team Effort, Rahul’s Nerve Stands Out

Rohit was full of praise for his teammates, especially KL Rahul, whose composure in a tense chase proved invaluable. Rahul’s unbeaten 34 off 33 balls under difficult conditions ensured India crossed the finish line, even as nerves ran high.

“Rahul has a solid mind. He never gets overwhelmed by pressure,” Rohit remarked, explaining why the team trusts him to anchor the middle overs and finish games.

India’s batting depth was another key talking point, with Rohit acknowledging the luxury of having an all-rounder like Ravindra Jadeja at No. 8. “That gives us confidence to go hard at the top. If it works, great. If not, we know we have the depth to recover.”

Spin Power and Tactical Brilliance

Beyond batting, India’s spin attack was a standout feature of their campaign. Varun Chakravarthy, who wasn’t even in the original squad, emerged as a match-winner, finishing as the tournament’s second-highest wicket-taker.

“Varun brought something different to the table. We wanted to maximize his potential, and he delivered exactly when we needed it,” Rohit said, lauding the spinner’s impact.

With India lifting yet another ICC trophy under Rohit’s captaincy, his legacy in limited-overs cricket continues to shine. And for now, his ODI journey is far from over.
