Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza has been appointed as the mentor for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL), which is set to take place in Mumbai from March 4 to 26. Mirza, who is the first Indian woman to win a major title and will be retiring from professional tennis soon, is expected to join the squad following the ATP Dubai Open.
The team has also signed on Australian Ben Sawyer as the head coach, with Malolan Rangarajan as the assistant coach, VR Vanitha as the fielding coach, and RX Murali as the power-hitting coach. Mirza has expressed her excitement about working with the young Indian players and helping them deal with the pressures of the sport.
She stated that she wants to make young girls believe that sport can be a career choice for them and that they can achieve their goals no matter the odds. Mirza is looking forward to working on the mental aspect of the game and is hoping to bring in her own experiences over 20 years of playing.
Royal Challengers has put together an impressive lineup of players, which includes Smriti Mandhana, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Sophie Devine, Dane van Niekerk, and Richa Ghosh. The team will open its WPL campaign on March 5, the second day of the tournament, against Delhi Capitals at Brabourne Stadium.
