Scotland bounced back from their opening day defeat in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier as they beat Kenya by 31 runs
Richie Berrington starred with bat and ball as he first hit 27 to help Scotland reach a total of 171 for six from their 20 overs before taking three wickets for 17 runs to derail Kenya’s chase.
Scotland were in trouble with the bat at 98-4 but Tom Sole (33 not out) and Calum MacLeod (30) alongside Berrington gave them a good total to defend.
Kenya, though, threatened to make it two defeats from two for the Scots when well placed at 90-1 after Irfan Karim’s maiden T20I fifty but Berrington struck twice in the 15th over as Scotland proved too strong.
In the final game of the day, UAE were inspired as they beat Ireland by five wickets.
Rohan Mustafa hit 39 from 16 balls and took four wickets as the host side chased down Ireland’s 125 in just 17 overs.
In Group A, Norman Vanua took a hat-trick maiden as PNG overpowered Bermuda to win by ten wickets.
Vanua’s three for 14 saw Bermuda bowled out for 89 from 17.2 before a fifty from captain Assad Vala alongside Tony Ura steered PNG to their target without the loss of a wicket in the 11th over.
Meanwhile, Netherlands made it two wins from two as their score of 140-6 from 20 overs proved too much for Namibia, winning by 44 runs.
Brandon Glover and Paul van Meekeren both took three wickets as Craig Williams offered the only resistance for Namibia with 27 as they were bowled out for 96 while Ryan ten Doeschate hit 59 to give Netherlands a modest total.
In Group B, Jersey were guided by Jonty Jenner’s 57 not out as they posted 184-4 in their 63-run win over Nigeria.
PNG ease to Bermuda win by ten wickets
PNG bowler Norman Vanua took a hat-trick maiden as his side blew Bermuda away, bowling them out for 89 in 17.2 overs.
Vanua took figures of three for 14 while he was ably supported by Nosaina Pokana’s two for 18 as Delray Rawlins (25) top scored for Bermuda.
In the chase, PNG aggressively set about their target and reached it without losing a wicket after only 10.2 overs thanks to an unbeaten half-century from Assad Vala (53 not out) alongside Tony Ura (33 not out).
PNG captain Assad Vala said: “Today was a really good performance, they’re a really dangerous team and if someone gets off it can take the game away from you so we kept changing the bowling over after over.
“We’re not looking too far ahead of ourselves, we want to go game by game, and we know we need to be on top of our game.”
Bermuda captain Dion Stovell said: “Up top we didn’t stick to our game plan and it’s tough trying to recover from 11 for five.
“PNG bowled and batted brilliantly and I think we just got outplayed today.
“It’s time to rethink our game plan, we need to show the world our talent as I feel sometimes we’re not disciplined.”
Jersey see off Nigeria by 63 runs
Jersey batsman Jonty Jenner’s maiden T20I fifty (57 not out) guided Jersey to an imperious total of 184-4 from 20 overs which Nigeria never got close to.
Jenner was ably supported by Nick Greenwood (43) who hit his highest T20I career score as well as by twin 20’s from openers Nick Ferraby and Harrison Carlyon – Daniel Ajekun the pick of the Nigerian bowlers with one for 16.
In reply, Leke Oyede top scored with 39 but Nigeria could not keep up with the rate as Jersey duo Elliot Miles (two for 22) and Dominic Blampied (two for 24) took two wickets each.
Jersey captain Charles Perchard said: “I was happy with the general performance, I thought the boys in the powerplay set us off nicely with some good aggression.
“It was great to see Jonty finish not out and we backed up our batting nicely with some good bowling and fielding in the second innings, even if there were a couple too many loose balls.
“We haven’t played on the next door pitch yet [where Jersey play next] and we might have to adapt our game slightly but I was happy with the brand of cricket we played and if we play like that hopefully we’ll have a good result against Canada.”
Nigeria captain Ademola Onikoyi said: “At some point during the game we lost a bit of momentum and Jersey showed their superiority while batting.
“180 on a track like this was still gettable and when we had them 80 for three we thought we had the match in control. There were one or two batsmen that took it away from us.
“I was happy to see we got some nerves out of our system today but we have to improve on our strike rate when batting for the next match”
Netherlands blow Namibia away by 44 runs
Netherlands seamers put paid to Namibia’s hopes of chasing 141 to win as they were skittled all out for 96 in 19 overs thanks to three wickets apiece from Brandon Glover (three for 15) and Paul van Meekeren (three for 16).
Craig Williams hit 27 for Namibia but they never recovered from being 27-3 as Netherlands became the first side to win their opening two games.
Earlier, Ryan ten Doeschate hit 59 as Netherlands hit back having been 66-4 at one stage and in danger of posting a total dangerously below par as Jan Frylinck took three for 25 for Namibia.
Netherlands captain Pieter Seelaar said: “I thought it was a fantastic win, from the start it was obvious the wicket wasn’t going to be as good as yesterday, but we hung in there well in the middle overs.
“We said 140 was definitely a winning score on that wicket and I think our bowlers stood up to the task, hitting the wicket which made it quite difficult to play the big shots.
“We’re not as free flowing so far as we would have liked, especially in the batting, but our bowling stocks and fielding has been brilliant and I think that’s something we have to take forward.”
Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus said: “We were very good in patches and started off very well but the partnership between Ryan ten Doeschate and Roelof van der Merwe stretched the innings and got them to a decent total on that wicket.
“We started well in the powerplay but once we lost two or three wickets that’s always a tough one on a wicket like this.
“We just have to battle now, we saw Scotland get upset by one of the new nations in this tournament so hopefully we can just play five or six more proper T20 games and that’ll be enough to qualify.”
Scotland hold off Kenya by 31 runs
Scotland saw off a spirited Kenyan chase as Richie Berrington took three for 17 in a spell of five wickets for 19 runs to give the Scots their first win of the competition.
Josh Davey (two for 25) and Safyaan Sharif (two for 28) also chipped in after Kenya had made a promising start at 90-1, Irfan Karim (51) hitting his first T20I fifty as they finished on 139-8 from 20 overs.
Earlier, Tom Sole (33 not out) and Calum MacLeod (30) helped Scotland post 170-6 from their 20 overs with Collins Obuya (two for 12) the pick of the Kenyan attack.
Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer said: “Richie is a big match player and he did it with bat and ball for us today.
“Irfan Karim batted brilliantly but it was his wicket that got us going, the impetus we got from the end of our innings was down to pure resilience in the way we found boundaries and Tom [Sole] and Matthew [Cross] did brilliantly.
“We were definitely behind the game at certain points with the ball and we definitely missed opportunities today but we’re getting better and if we keep improving we should be in a good position over the next couple of games.”
Kenya captain Shem Ngoche said: “After restricting them to 170 we felt we could chase that score but unfortunately it didn’t happen.
“After ten overs we felt like we needed to be above the run rate but we didn’t get the boundaries we needed and that’s where we went wrong.
“I think we need to work on our creativity, only a few guys can play those kind of shots [sweeps, reverse sweeps etc…]. That was the main difference, because Scotland scored 30-40 runs with those sorts of shots.”
UAE stun Ireland to win by five wickets
UAE were guided by Rohan Mustafa’s all-round brilliance as his quickfire 39 and four for 18 downed Ireland by five wickets.
Paul Stirling (72) had appeared to set Ireland up for a big score but Mustafa had other ideas, decimating the Irish middle order while ably supported by Ahmed Raza (one for 17) and Junaid Siddique (one for 25).
In the chase, despite the best efforts of Mark Adair (one for 21) and Boyd Rankin (one for 26) Mustafa’s 39 from 16 balls spearheaded a UAE side that never looked under threat of coming up short to a famous win.
UAE captain Ahmed Raza said: “Beating a full member team is a great feeling and on the back of yesterday’s game it’s a big morale booster for us.
“You have to credit how Stirlo [Paul Stirling] batted, he took the innings deep and to a competitive score.
“I’ve known Rohan [Mustafa] for over ten years and I just told him to go and express himself.”
Ireland captain Gary Wilson said: “When Rohan [Mustafa] came out and played like he did he kind of killed the game but I thought we bowled well after that, the UAE bowled well and it wasn’t to be today but we’ll come back strong against Oman in a couple of days.
“We know there are areas of our game we need to get better at, anytime you hit 125 you know it’s not enough in a T20 game.”
