Bangladesh cricket has reached a significant milestone as Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid becomes the first umpire from his country to be added to the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires. This prestigious appointment follows a rigorous selection process conducted by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as part of its annual review.
Sharfuddoula’s elevation to the Elite Panel marks a culmination of his consistent performance and dedication to the sport. Having served on the ICC International Panel of Umpires since 2016, he has steadily climbed the ranks, earning recognition for his sharp decision-making and professionalism on the field.
The selection panel, chaired by ICC General Manager – Cricket, Wasim Khan, included esteemed cricket personalities such as former player and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar, retired New Zealand umpire Tony Hill, and consultant officiating expert Mike Riley. Their decision reflects Sharfuddoula’s exemplary track record and potential to excel at the highest level of umpiring.
Sharfuddoula’s journey in international umpiring began with his first appointment in January 2010, officiating an ODI match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Mirpur. Since then, he has officiated in 10 Men’s Test Matches, 63 Men’s ODIs, and 44 Men’s T20Is, showcasing his versatility and adaptability across different formats of the game.
In addition to his contributions to men’s cricket, Sharfuddoula has also made significant strides in women’s cricket, having officiated in 13 Women’s ODI matches and 28 Women’s T20Is. His experience includes prestigious tournaments such as the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cups in 2017 and 2021, the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2018.
