MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will benefit from the amended rule of IPL wherein Indian players who have already completed a minimum period of five years since their retirement from international cricket have been made available for uncapped billing.
The said amendment was in place way back in 2008 but it was withdrawn last year, however, the IPL has restored the said amendment which will now be to the advantage of the franchisees so that they can retain the retired Indian players at a relatively cheaper cost.
Dhoni with a legacy to be an uncapped player in the IPL
New rule: Dhoni, who hasn’t represented India since the 2019 ODI World Cup due to retirement, comes under the new rule. He hasn’t played international cricket or received a BCCI central contract in more than five years. CSK can retain their inspirational skipper as an uncapped player for INR 4 crore after he comes down from the INR 12 crore he attracted in 2022.
Dhoni had knee surgery in 2023 which confines him to the role for the 2024 IPL season. Before the same season, Dhoni handed over the baton of CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad, thus keeping himself well back in more of a limited role as a lower-order hitter.
With Dhoni’s future in the Indian Premier League still to be determined, the player and CSK are waiting for the rules for retaining players to be confirmed before finally deciding on his participation in the next seasons. Dhoni’s supposed return as an uncapped player in the IPL campaigns recently added a new interesting layer to his journey in the Indian Premier League.
