Shubman Gill, the young Indian cricketer, silenced his critics with a brilliant 126-run knock in the third and final T20I against New Zealand. This match-winning performance saw Gill become only the fifth player to score a century in all three formats for India and also broke Virat Kohli’s record as India’s highest scorer in an innings in T20Is. In reaction to Gill’s feat, Kohli posted a picture with him on Instagram and referred to him as “the future”.
With Gill’s contribution, India posted a total of 234/4 and went on to beat New Zealand by 168 runs, clinching the series 2-1. The Indian bowlers dominated the Kiwis, dismissing them for just 66 runs in 12.1 overs. This huge victory was India’s biggest ever in T20Is and the largest margin of runs in a match played between two Test-playing nations.
Gill’s century was especially remarkable considering that he had only scored 76 runs in his previous five T20s since making his debut last month against Sri Lanka. He has now established himself as a player to watch in all formats of the game.
Gill and Kohli will now face off against Australia in a four-match Test series starting on February 9th.
