South Africa registered a massive 102-run win over Sri Lanka in their opening ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday.
South Africa batted first and posted a record 428 for five in their 50 overs, the highest score in a World Cup match. Quinton de Kock (100) and Rassie van der Dussen (108) shared a 204-run partnership for the second wicket, before Aiden Markram smashed the fastest ever World Cup century off just 54 balls. Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller also contributed useful cameos.
Sri Lanka were bowled out for 326 in 44.5 overs in reply. Kusal Mendis (76) and Charith Asalanka (79) scored half-centuries, but the chase was always beyond them. Dasun Shanaka made 68, but South Africa’s bowlers kept the Sri Lankan batsmen in check.
Gerald Coetzee picked up three wickets, while Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj claimed two wickets each.
Aiden Markram was awarded as Player of the Match on his brilliant performance with the bat.
