Sri Lanka’s cricketing sensation, Wanindu Hasaranga, faces an unexpected setback in his IPL 2024 debut journey with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The all-rounder’s much-anticipated debut will have to wait for at least another week as he grapples with chronic pain in his left heel, seeking expert medical advice to address the issue.

Having recently participated in a series against Bangladesh, Hasaranga showcased exceptional resilience by playing through substantial pain, as revealed by ESPNcricinfo. Sri Lanka Cricket’s medical staff attributes the discomfort to wear and tear in the musculoskeletal apparatus of his left heel.

In light of this diagnosis, the board’s medical panel has advised Hasaranga to consult overseas specialists to better understand the nature of his injury and explore effective management strategies. While the bowler awaits further assessment, reports suggest he may be cleared to leave Sri Lanka in a week or more.

The news comes as a disappointment to SRH, who secured Hasaranga’s services for a substantial sum of INR 1.5 Crore during the IPL 2024 auction. Despite expectations of a bidding war, the franchise managed to acquire him at his base price, banking on his formidable skills to bolster their squad.

With no official timeline for Hasaranga’s return announced by either the franchise or the SLC, speculation arises about his availability for the remainder of the IPL season. However, Sri Lanka remains committed to prioritizing the player’s fitness ahead of the impending T20 World Cup 2024, slated to commence on June 1st.

As Hasaranga navigates this health challenge, SRH must explore alternative options to fortify their spin bowling arsenal. With players like Abhishek Sharma, Glenn Philips, and Washington Sundar in contention, SRH aim to regroup after a disappointing start to their IPL 2024 campaign, having suffered a defeat against the Kolkata Knight Riders in their tournament opener.
