Sunrisers Hyderabad turned the M Chinnaswamy Stadium into a six-hitting haven on Monday, rewriting not just their own record books, but also etching their name in IPL history. Not only did they become the team to smash the most sixes in a single IPL inning but also registered a couple of other records. Batting first against Royal Challengers Bangalore, SRH unleashed a batting masterclass, culminating in a mammoth 287-run total – the highest ever recorded by a team in a single IPL inning.
Leading the charge was the in-form Travis Head. The Australian left-hander carved his name into IPL folklore by registering the fourth-fastest century in the tournament’s history. Head reached the three-figure mark in a mere 39 deliveries, an innings laced with eight towering sixes. He finished unbeaten on a well-compiled 102, laying the foundation for SRH’s dominance.
However, the fireworks didn’t stop with Head. Heinrich Klaasen, known for his aggressive batting style, joined the party with a blistering 31-ball 67, peppered with seven sixes. Openers Abhishek Sharma and Aiden Markram chipped in with two sixes each, while the hard-hitting Abdul Samad provided a late flourish with three maximums of his own.
This onslaught of sixes yielded another record for SRH. Their 22 sixes as a team surpassed Royal Challengers Bangalore’s previous record of 21 sixes, set against Pune Warriors India back in 2013.
RCB, chasing a daunting target, could only manage 262 runs in their allotted overs, falling short by 25 runs. SRH’s bowling attack, led by the ever-dependable Pat Cummins, ensured that the home team’s batting heroics weren’t in vain.
This victory further strengthens SRH’s position in the IPL 2024 points table. With four wins from their six outings, they currently occupy the fourth spot. Their potent batting lineup, brimming with confidence and power, coupled with their disciplined bowling attack, makes them a serious contender for the championship title. The team’s record-breaking performance against RCB is a clear warning to their opponents – they are a force to be reckoned with.
