Pakistan’s opener Mohammad Rizwan scored a world record in the final of the T20 World Cup against Australia. Rizwan became the first ever batsman in the history of T20I to score 1000 runs in a single calendar year, on Thursday. Rizwan scored his third fifty of the tournament. He scored 52-ball 67 against the Aussies.
His opening partner and captain, Babar Azam, is at the second on the list with 826 runs, also scored in the year 2021. Rizwan recently broke Chris Gayle’s world record for the most runs in T20 cricket in a calendar year against Scotland. With his knock against Australia on Thursday, he now has 1743 runs in 39 innings with a strike rate of 58.10. Rizwan finishes with 1033 runs in 20 innings at the strike rate of 86.30 after today’s innings. He scored 10 half-centuries and one century.
Despite his health issues, Rizwan top-scored for Pakistan in the semi-final, smashing 67 off 52 balls. Pakistan’s team doctor Najeebullah Soomro said,
“Mohammad Rizwan developed a severe chest infection on the 9th of November after which he was admitted to the hospital. He spent two nights in the ICU recovering. He made an incredible recovery and was deemed fit before the match. We can see his great determination and tenacity that shows his spirit of performing for the country. And we can see how he performed today.”
Pakistan captain Azam also surpassed Virat Kohli’s record by becoming the fastest batsman to complete 2,500 runs in the shortest format. Babar reached the landmark in 62 innings while Kohli had taken 68 innings.
