TNPL 2024 Match 19 Report

In an exciting 19th match of the Tamil Nadu Premier League held at Tirunelveli on July 21, 2024, Dindigul Dragons edged out Lyca Kovai Kings by 5 wickets, with just four balls to spare. Baba Indrajith was the standout performer, earning the Player of the Match accolade for his stellar unbeaten 96 off 49 balls, leading his team to victory in a nail-biting finish.

Lyca Kovai Kings posted a competitive total of 172/5 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings began on a shaky note with the early dismissal of S Sujay for 8 runs, caught by Varun off the bowling of Diran. Suresh Kumar soon followed, bowled by Sandeep Warrier for a mere 3 runs, leaving Kovai at a precarious 18/2.

Despite the early setbacks, Sai Sudharsan (33 off 39) and Ram Arvindh (25 off 26) attempted to stabilize the innings. However, it was captain M Shahrukh Khan who provided the much-needed momentum. Shahrukh Khan smashed an explosive 51 off 25 balls, including five fours and three sixes, supported by Atheeq Ur Rahman’s quickfire 29 off 12 balls. Their partnership propelled the Kovai Kings to a respectable total.

Varun Chakravarthy was the pick of the bowlers for Dindigul, claiming 2 wickets for 29 runs in his 4 overs. Sandeep Warrier and Diran took one wicket each, while P Vignesh chipped in with a crucial breakthrough. Suboth Bhati, although expensive, bowled four overs and managed to contain the Kovai batsmen in the death overs.

Chasing 173, Dindigul Dragons started cautiously but lost opener Vimal Khumar early for 13 runs. Shivam Singh (36 off 33) provided some resistance but fell just as the partnership with Baba Indrajith was flourishing. Indrajith then took charge, playing a captain’s knock, anchoring the innings with a brilliant 96* off 49 balls, decorated with 11 fours and 5 sixes.

Indrajith’s composure and aggressive stroke play kept Dindigul in the hunt, even as wickets fell at the other end. A mini-collapse saw them slip to 169/5, with Shahrukh Khan claiming two quick wickets. However, Suboth Bhati (7* off 4) held his nerve, ensuring Dindigul reached the target with four balls remaining.

Shahrukh Khan was the standout bowler for Kovai, picking up 2 wickets for 20 runs in his 3 overs. Jhathavedh Subramanyan also took 2 wickets but was on the expensive side. Manimaran Siddharth and Mohammed Mohammed struggled to contain the runs, which eventually cost them the game.
