This significant achievement occurred during the ICC World Cup 2023 match against South Africa at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Kohli’s batting prowess knows no bounds, as he now boasts a total of 79 international hundreds. Among these, one belongs to the T20Is, while an impressive 29 are attributed to Test cricket. In the world of ODIs, he stands tall, having registered a staggering 119 scores of 50 or more, surpassing the legendary Kumar Sangakkara’s tally of 118. However, the ultimate record in this category remains Sachin Tendulkar’s extraordinary 145 half-centuries.
Not just limited to centuries and fifties, Kohli’s record-breaking spree extended to the home ground as well. During the South Africa match, he crossed the monumental 6000 ODI runs while playing on home soil, securing the second position in this regard, once again following in the footsteps of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
In the grand stage of Men’s ODI World Cups, Kohli has proven himself as one of the finest. He overtook Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara to become the third-highest run-scorer in this prestigious tournament, trailing only behind Sachin Tendulkar and Australia’s Ricky Ponting in the elite list of World Cup run-getters.
Moreover, Kohli’s name joined the exclusive club of batters who have achieved the milestone of scoring 500 or more runs in Men’s ODI World Cups. He is the third Indian to accomplish this feat, sharing the podium with Sachin Tendulkar, who achieved it twice, and the illustrious Rohit Sharma.
