In a recent cricket match between Sussex and Somerset, Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan had a harrowing experience as he was involved in a nasty collision with his teammate Nathan McAndrew while attempting to take a catch. The incident occurred on the fourth ball of the seventh over when Tom Kohler-Cadmore top-edged a delivery over extra cover.
As the ball went skywards, Shadab and McAndrew both sprinted to secure the catch from different directions. Unfortunately, their paths converged, leading to a collision that left both fielders sprawled on the ground. Immediate medical attention was required, and the game was momentarily halted for approximately 10 minutes to ensure their well-being.
While the catch was ultimately dropped, the focus quickly shifted to the health and safety of the players involved. Nathan McAndrew received medical attention and was able to return to the field. However, as a precautionary measure, Shadab Khan did not resume playing and remained in the dugout for the remainder of the match.
Providing an update on Shadab’s condition, Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace stated that Shadab was alright but had a sore neck. The medical staff decided to remove him from the game due to concerns about potential concussion. Farbrace expressed relief that both players escaped serious injuries and emphasized that their well-being was the most important outcome.
Taking to Twitter the following morning, Shadab personally updated his fans about his condition, providing reassurance that he was okay after the collision.
Before the unfortunate incident, Shadab had made a modest contribution with the bat, scoring 9 runs off 8 balls, including a six. However, due to the collision, he didn’t get a chance to showcase his bowling skills. Somerset comfortably chased the target of 184, securing victory with five wickets in hand.
While the match didn’t end on a high note for Sussex, the positive aspect is that both Shadab Khan and Nathan McAndrew avoided serious injuries. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in the game and the importance of prioritizing player safety.
