South Africa international Wayne Parnell has signed with Durham for the ongoing T20 Blast, bolstering the team’s bowling lineup. With a couple of injury concerns and pacer Matthew Potts being called up to the England squad for the upcoming series against Ireland and the Ashes 2023, Durham swiftly secured the services of the seasoned bowling all-rounder.
Parnell recently represented Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2023, where he claimed nine wickets in seven matches, playing a crucial role for the team despite their failure to qualify for the playoffs. In international cricket, Parnell has taken 59 wickets in the shortest format, with a career-best of 5/30 against Ireland.
Expressing his delight at joining Durham, Parnell emphasized his familiarity with English conditions and expressed his intention to utilize his experience to contribute to the team’s success. He stated, “I’m delighted to have this opportunity to play for Durham. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my previous spells in England, and everyone speaks well of Durham.”
Durham’s Director of Cricket, Marcus North, highlighted the significance of Parnell’s international experience and leadership skills for the team. He emphasized Parnell’s track record in delivering performances in franchise cricket and his ability to guide the younger players in the squad. North stated, “Wayne is an experienced international-level T20 bowler with a proven track record of delivering performances in franchise cricket. His experience of playing for and captaining T20 teams around the world will be valuable to us this season.”
North further added, “He bowls left-arm pace and can provide runs down the order with the bat. He has played a lot of white-ball cricket in England and he comes straight to Durham on the back of a good stint in the IPL, so he is ready to play when he arrives this weekend.”
Wayne Parnell’s inclusion in the Durham squad brings a wealth of expertise and versatility to the team. With his international experience and recent IPL stint, Durham will look to leverage his skills to achieve success in the T20 Blast.
