The cricketing world was shaken with the news that former West Indies cricketer Marlon Samuels has been slapped with a six-year ban by the ICC. This verdict comes in the wake of an independent Anti-Corruption Tribunal’s findings in August, following charges leveled against him by the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) in September 2021. The ban officially took effect on November 11, 2023.

The allegations against Samuels included a range of offenses, with the tribunal finding him guilty on four counts. These violations comprised failing to disclose the receipt of gifts, payments, or benefits that could tarnish the sport’s reputation, as outlined in Article 2.4.2. Another charge, under Article 2.4.3, involved Samuels’ failure to disclose the receipt of hospitality valued at $750 or more.

Furthermore, he was found guilty of failing to cooperate with the Anti-Corruption Official’s investigation (Article 2.4.6) and obstructing the same investigation by concealing pertinent information (Article 2.4.7).

Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager of the HR and Integrity Unit, emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that Samuels, despite being retired, was well aware of his obligations under the Anti-Corruption Code. Marshall stated,

“The ban of six years will act as a strong deterrent to any participant who intends to break the rules.”

Marlon Samuels, who had a career spanning close to two decades, participated in numerous anti-corruption sessions during his active playing days. Despite his retirement, the ban serves as a stern reminder that offenses committed during one’s active career will not go unpunished, and it is a significant step in maintaining the integrity of the sport.
