In a thrilling encounter between Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi in the 2024 season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Akeal Hosein etched his name in history as the sixth player to bag a hat-trick. Despite his remarkable feat, the Quetta Gladiators’ spinner’s efforts ended in a losing cause against Peshawar Zalmi.
Hosein’s hat-trick included dismissing Aamir Jamal, Mehran Mumtaz, and Luke Wood, showcasing his prowess with the ball. However, his exceptional performance wasn’t enough to secure a victory for his team. Yet, he is now now in the list of hat tricks in PSL history.
List of players with hat tricks in PSL
Reflecting on previous instances of hat tricks in PSL history, Mohammad Amir of Karachi Kings became the first player to achieve this feat in the inaugural season of 2016. He dismissed Dwayne Bravo, Zohaib Khan, and Kevon Cooper during a match against Lahore Qalandars.
The trend continued in subsequent seasons, with Junaid Khan of Multan Sultans claiming a hat-trick against Lahore Qalandars in the third season of PSL 2018. His victims included Yasir Shah, Cameron Delport, and Raza Hasan. Another memorable hat-trick was by Multan Sultans’ Imran Tahir in the same season against Quetta Gladiators. Tahir picked Hassan Khan, John Hastings, and Rahat Ali on three consecutive balls.
In the 2019 season, Islamabad United’s Mohammad Sami joined the elite list by clinching a hat-trick against Peshawar Zalmi including the wickets of Wahab Riaz, Umaid Asif, and Hasan Ali.
Before Akeal, Abbas Afridi of Multan Sultans secured a hat-trick against Quetta Gladiators in PSL 2023. His targets were Mohammad Nawaz, Umaid Asif, and Umar Akmal. With Akeal Hosein’s recent addition to this prestigious list, hat-tricks continue to be a rare yet exhilarating occurrence in the history of the Pakistan Super League.
