The cricket fever is building up fast as the CPL 2024 season comes closer. This is what turns out to be the most colorful, thrilling behemoth T20 tournament in the world, and this is going to be the twelfth season, beginning on August 30. In all the completion of electrifying matches through the years, there is one team that has never been able to etch its name on this prestigious CPL title—Barbados Royals.
Barbados Royals earned CPL title as Barbados Tridents twice
The Barbados Royals, formerly the Barbados Tridents, have represented some of the best sides in the league, boasting both local and international talent; however, this elusive CPL title continues to escape them. They came agonizingly close in the 2022 version when they made it to the finals and faced the Jamaica Tallawahs.
It was a high-stakes affair, and the Royals ended up being runners-up, losing to the Tallawahs by eight wickets. The defeat therefore frustrated a team so full of promise but had until now failed to capitalize on this potential.
Though the Royals have had a bumpy ride since those years, making it into the knockout stages in the CPL—only to struggle further to go all the way, their highest victory was in 2019, when as the Barbados Tridents, they won the championship by defeating Guyana Amazon Warriors by 27 runs in the final.
They also earned a CPL title back in 2014 against Guyana Amazon Warriors through DLS method. However, despite the victory, the rebranded Barbados Royals are yet to win their first-ever CPL title under their newly adopted name.
Notably, in the CPL 2024 season, the Jamaica Tallawahs will be replaced by a new team—the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons. This is adding another layer of interest to the tournament as teams adjust to the new dynamics of the competition. For the Barbados Royals, this season presents another opportunity to finally snap out of their title drought and clinch the CPL title once and for all under their new name since 2021. Otherwise, all teams have at least one trophy under their cabinet.
Will 2024 be that year where the Barbados Royals have everything right and get that elusive CPL title? Or will they remain in the shadows in regard to former glories? The cricket world awaits with bated breath, as only time can tell.
