All eyes will be on United Arab Emirates captain Chaya Mughal when her team plays Sri Lanka in a Women’s Asia Cup match on Sunday.

She is the team’s senior at age 36 years, 104 days. After competing in the Women’s T20 Championship final with Malaysia in June, UAE is making its Asia Cup debut.

Mughal, a native of Jammu and Kashmir, moved to the UAE in 2009 and started working as a kindergarten instructor at a school in Duba. But she persisted in playing the sport.

Mughal mentioned in her prior interview with FemaleCricket that she visited Sharjah and met coach Mohammed Hyder as soon as she learned about the UAE women’s cricket squad. Mughal was instructed to get in touch with the squad once they were in the nation. The team was traveling to Oman in December 2014 to compete in the inaugural GCC women’s Twenty20 championship.

Mughal joined the training session after Hyder called her a few weeks later, and in 2015, she was selected for the UAE team. Mughal, a fan of Jonty Rhodes, eventually rose to the position of team captain and, with Chamani Seneviratna, holds the UAE T20I record for most wickets taken (28 wickets).

The team is quite enthusiastic because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Everyone wants to capitalize on the girls’ high and make the most of it. Before the Asia Cup opening, Mughal told Emirates Cricket, “We will give it our all, and there is nothing to lose.
