Gujarat Titans (GT) are making a strategic move by bringing back Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka to their squad for the ongoing Indian Premier League. The experienced all-rounder is poised to step in following the untimely departure of Glenn Phillips from IPL 2025, who suffered a groin injury during GT’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 12.
Phillips, a vital cog in GT’s middle order, was unable to complete the game and has since returned to New Zealand for treatment. In an official statement, Gujarat Titans extended their best wishes for his recovery, confirming the need for a replacement to keep their campaign on track.
Shanaka Set to Replace Glenn Phillips in IPL 2025
This isn’t unfamiliar territory for Dasun Shanaka. The Sri Lankan all-rounder previously represented Gujarat Titans in the 2023 IPL season, featuring in three matches. Although his batting numbers were modest — 26 runs at an average of 13.00 and a strike rate of 100 — his proven ability to handle pressure situations makes his return a calculated and timely move.
While Shanaka didn’t roll his arm over last time due to the impact player rule, his experience batting on subcontinental pitches could prove invaluable. With slow surfaces expected to dominate in the latter half of the tournament, GT may lean on his steady hand to anchor the middle order, where Sherfane Rutherford has been filling in during Phillips’ absence.
Shanaka’s Skillset Could Be Key
Even if Gujarat Titans don’t immediately require Shanaka’s bowling services, his aggressive batting style and leadership experience are assets that could swing tight matches. Known for being a player who can seize the moment on his day, Shanaka’s reintegration into the Titans’ setup could offer fresh momentum as they chase playoff qualification once again.
According to sources, including the News Wire, Shanaka’s arrival is imminent. Whether he will slot straight into the playing XI remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Gujarat Titans are banking on experience to navigate this mid-season hurdle.
