In a significant roster shake-up, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced left-arm seamer Chetan Sakariya as the replacement for the injured speedster Umran Malik in IPL 2025. Malik, known for his blistering pace, has been ruled out due to a series of injuries and health setbacks, leaving KKR to reshuffle their bowling lineup.
Injured Umran Malik Out of IPL 2025, Sakariya Steps In
Malik, 25, last featured in IPL 2024, playing just one game for Sunrisers Hyderabad. His career has been marred by injuries and illness since his breakout season in 2021, where he gained fame for consistently clocking speeds over 150kph. Most recently, Malik was sidelined by a hip fracture, following a bout of dengue that forced him out of the Duleep Trophy earlier in the 2024-25 domestic season.
Sakariya, who has been recovering from his own injury struggles, last played competitively in February 2024 during a Ranji Trophy match for Saurashtra. The left-arm pacer, with two T20Is under his belt, brings a different dimension to KKR’s attack. While he may not replicate Malik’s express pace, Sakariya’s ability to swing the ball and his experience in high-pressure situations make him a valuable addition.
KKR’s decision to bring in Sakariya also addresses the absence of a reliable Indian pace option to complement Anrich Nortje, who has his own injury concerns. Sakariya could also provide cover for Spencer Johnson, KKR’s first-choice left-arm fast bowler, adding depth to their bowling arsenal.
Will Sakariya Replace Umran’s Pace?
The defending champions, who clinched the IPL 2024 title by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad, are banking on continuity and strategic replacements to retain their crown. Malik’s absence is a blow, but KKR’s management has shown faith in Sakariya’s ability to step up.
As the IPL 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on how KKR adapt to these changes. With Sakariya’s inclusion, the team aims to maintain its balance and firepower, ensuring they remain strong contenders in what promises to be another thrilling edition of the tournament.
