As the anticipation for the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) intensifies, Punjab Kings, one of the renowned franchises, has unveiled their jersey for IPL 2024, sparking a mix of reactions among fans. While many admired the bold choice of a solid red jersey with fragments of blue, a significant portion of fans raised questions regarding the color scheme.
Preity Zinta, co-owner of the franchise, shed light on the decision-making process behind the jersey’s design, revealing that they initially considered various color combinations reminiscent of the franchise’s jerseys from the 2009-2013 seasons. However, their plans had to be revised due to the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) ban on certain colors, including white, grey, and silver, as they closely resemble the cricket ball.
Acknowledging the BCCI’s regulations, Zinta and other stakeholders opted for a red-blue jersey combination for IPL 2024, aiming to ensure compliance while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing design. Speaking at an event, Zinta explained, “Earlier, we had a combination of red, grey, and silver, but then the BCCI banned silver, grey, and white due to sighting issues with the ball. Hence, we went ahead with red, and this year we have the best combination with red.”
The unveiling of the jersey comes ahead of Punjab Kings’ much-anticipated opening match against the Delhi Capitals on March 23rd, as IPL 2024 kicks off on March 22nd. The Board has already released the schedule for the first 17 days of the tournament, with the remaining fixtures to be announced in consideration of India’s general election polling dates.
