Will Mohammad Hafeez become PCB's chief selector?

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a significant step in its management by appointing Zaka Ashraf as the chairman of a newly formed management committee. Under this new leadership, Ashraf has offered former Test cricketer Mohammad Hafeez the opportunity to become the chief selector for the national team.

Sources reveal that Ashraf met with Hafeez, who retired in 2022, on Thursday to extend the offer. Hafeez, now working as a cricket analyst, requested some time to contemplate the proposal.

During their meeting, Hafeez expressed his congratulations to Ashraf on his new role as the head of the PCB. He also shared his respect for Ashraf’s administrative abilities, stating, “Zaka Ashraf is a good administrator. I honestly respect him a lot. I will definitely consider a good offer to serve Pakistan cricket.”

It is reported that the current chief selector, Haroon Rashid, will soon be removed from his position. Besides Hafeez, several other former Test cricketers, including Younis Khan, Mohsin Hassan Khan, Saleem Yousuf, and Shoaib Akhtar, are also likely to be appointed to various positions within the new selection setup.

The federal government, on July 5, officially appointed Zaka Ashraf as the chairman of the new management committee. The formation of this committee was approved through a summary circulated by the government.

The committee consists of ten members and has been entrusted with a four-month tenure. In addition to Ashraf, the committee includes Kaleem Ullah Khan, Ashfaq Akhtar, Musaddiq Islam, Azmat Parvez, Zaheer Abbas, Khurram Karim Somroo, Khuwaja Nadeem, Mustafa Ramday, and Zulfiqar Malik.

As part of these recent developments, a new chief election commissioner, Mahmood Iqbal, has also been appointed, replacing Ahmed Shehzad Farooq Rana.

With a new management committee and potential changes in the selection setup, the PCB aims to bring fresh perspectives and expertise to further enhance Pakistan cricket.
