'With this squad, we’ve covered all bases' - Rohit Sharma on India's Champions Trophy 2025 squad announcement

India’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad was announced on Saturday by skipper Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar at a press conference. The 15-member squad, which will be playing in the marquee ICC event across Pakistan and the UAE from February 19 to March 9, has a good mix of experience, all-round capabilities, and a spin-heavy attack.

Rohit Sharma said he was confident about his side while highlighting the strength the all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar added to the team. “These players are genuine all-rounders, capable of delivering with both bat and ball. Their inclusion ensures balance and depth in the squad,” Rohit said. He further pointed out the strategic benefits of having spin options carved out for the pitches in Dubai, as India would be playing under the hybrid tournament model there.

Key Focus on Spin and All-Round Abilities

India’s spin department, spearheaded by Jadeja, Axar, Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav, forms the backbone of the team’s strategy. Rohit stressed that these players are not mere specialists but dynamic contributors capable of excelling in various match situations. “With this squad, we’ve covered all bases—off-spin, left-arm spin, and quality batting from our all-rounders,” he added.

But although the selection contains plenty of spin, the team does not lack for pace. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Arshdeep Singh spearhead the challenge that Hardik Pandya provides in the form of a seaming all-rounder. However, Bumrah was picked because of his fitness, and Harshit Rana was named on the England ODI squad as cover.

The Road Ahead

India will be starting their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 in Dubai. India’s group consists of arch-rivals Pakistan, whom they will clash with in a high-stakes game on February 23, and New Zealand. With eight teams, the tournament promises 15 ODIs of thrilling cricket action.

As a final series to fine-tune strategies going into the all-important ICC event, India hosts England for an ODI rubber of three one-dayers.
