The Saudi Arabian government is reportedly in the process of establishing the world’s richest T20 league, with a focus on attracting Indian players. The move will require approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and member countries. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) currently restricts Indian players from participating in overseas T20 competitions. However, the country’s ambitious Vision 2030 plan emphasizes the role of sports and entertainment in improving people’s lives.
Saudi Arabia Plans World’s Richest T20 League, Seeks ICC Approval
The ICC Chairman, Greg Barclay, has confirmed Saudi Arabia’s interest in cricket, noting that given the country’s increasing investment in sports, it would make sense for them to pursue cricket. The Prince of Saudi Arabia, Fahd bin Abdulaziz, has highlighted the importance of sports and entertainment in realizing the Vision 2030 goals. Hosting major sports events in the country is expected to have a significant impact on the local population.
Saudi Arabia has already hosted a range of international sporting events, including the Spanish Super Cup, the Formula One, Golf, and boxing. The country is set to host the FIFA Men’s Club World Cup later this year. In addition, a group led by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign investment fund purchased Newcastle United, a Premier League football team, in 2021.
Saudi Arabia’s increasing investment in sports has also attracted high-profile athletes to the country. Last year, Cristiano Ronaldo signed a deal worth more than 200 million euros to play for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia until June 2025. The country’s interest in cricket is expected to grow in the coming years, given its regional presence and the potential for attracting top talent.
