Former Pakistani fast bowler, Mohammad Amir, has voiced his opinion on the captaincy issues plaguing the Pakistan cricket team, emphasizing that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should put an end to the rumors by officially appointing Babar Azam as captain for the upcoming ICC World Cup. Amir expressed his views on his official YouTube channel, stressing the need for a timely decision.
With only a few months remaining until the World Cup, Amir argued that there is no valid reason to change the captaincy, citing the example set by the PCB when they announced the appointment of the head coach. He emphasized that it would be more sensible for the board to officially declare Babar Azam as captain.
Highlighting Babar’s unparalleled experience within the current Pakistani team, Amir firmly stated that there is no better choice for captaincy than Babar himself. He commended Babar’s leadership skills and highlighted the wealth of experience he has accumulated as a captain.
While the PCB has not issued an official statement on the captaincy matter, Najam Sethi, the chairman of PCB’s management committee, recently confirmed in an interview that the national team will indeed play in the 2023 World Cup under Babar’s captaincy. Sethi further assured that there are no immediate concerns about Babar’s captaincy, mentioning the satisfactory performance he displayed during the series against New Zealand. He also revealed that he personally spoke to Babar to provide reassurance.
Reliable sources indicate that the PCB’s decision-making panel, consisting of Najam Sethi, chief selector Haroon Rashid, and Director Coaching Mickey Arthur, have unanimously agreed to place their trust in Babar as the captain of the team until the 2023 World Cup. Babar will lead the team not only in the World Cup but also in all upcoming series and events leading up to the prestigious tournament.
This definitive decision to retain Babar as captain puts to rest any speculation about alternative options or the existence of multiple contenders for the coveted position. It is believed that Babar has already been consulted and informed about the decision, further solidifying his role as the leader of the Pakistan cricket team.
