Rashid Khan talks about captaincy experience in IPL

Rashid Khan has been displaying sensational form in the IPL 2023, emerging as the joint-leading wicket-taker of the season with an impressive tally of 23 wickets. The Afghan cricketer’s exceptional performance was instrumental in Gujarat Titans’ triumphant 2022 campaign as well. Recently, the wrist spinner reminisced about the moment when he assumed the captaincy of Gujarat in the absence of Hardik Pandya during a crucial match in the 2022 season.

Recalling the experience, the 24-year-old expressed that leading an IPL team, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, was a dream come true for him. In preparation for the match against defending champions CSK, Rashid woke up at 3 am for sehri (pre-dawn meal). To his surprise, he received a message from Ashish Nehra, informing him about Hardik’s unavailability due to illness. This news brought both excitement and pressure to Rashid, who regarded it as a remarkable opportunity.

“That match was truly special for me. It marked my debut as an IPL captain, and that too during Ramadan. I couldn’t sleep the night before the game as everything was flashing before my eyes. I pondered over what I would say at the toss and how I should approach the game. While I have led Afghanistan in the past, leading a team in the IPL is a whole different experience,” Rashid shared candidly on the Gujarat Titans podcast.

In the match itself, CSK batted first and set a target of 169/5, courtesy of Ruturaj Gaikwad’s impressive innings of 73 off 48 deliveries. Gujarat Titans found themselves struggling at 87/5 in the 12.4 overs of their chase. It was at this juncture that Rashid, in partnership with David Miller, showcased his batting prowess. The duo stitched together a crucial 70-run stand off just 37 balls, with Rashid contributing a valuable 40 runs from 21 deliveries. Their remarkable efforts enabled Gujarat Titans to chase down the target with one ball to spare, clinching a thrilling three-wicket victory.

Shifting focus to the ongoing IPL 2023, Rashid once again assumed the captaincy for Gujarat Titans in their third game against Kolkata Knight Riders in Ahmedabad. The wrist-spinner produced a scintillating performance, claiming a hat trick and finishing with figures of 3/37 in his four overs. However, Rinku Singh stole the spotlight by smashing five consecutive sixes against Yash Dayal in the last over, propelling KKR to a highly improbable victory. Despite the loss, Rashid’s exceptional display showcased his leadership skills and match-winning abilities.

It is evident that Rashid Khan has been making a significant impact in the IPL, not only with his exceptional bowling but also with his leadership qualities. As he continues to shine on the cricketing stage, the Afghan star’s contributions will undoubtedly play a vital role in Gujarat Titans’ journey in the ongoing IPL season and beyond.
