Brad Currie’s gravity-defying catch sent shockwaves around the cricketing world, propelling him into instant viral stardom. And now, as Scotland’s central striker in the attack gearing up for the T20 World Cup, Currie prepares to show his groove in the global arena.
Of that incredible catch, he said this week: “It was surreal; I have never experienced anything like it before. The widespread reception on social media, with millions of views, absolutely took my breath away. A catch worthy of hailing Currie as the best fielder, even in the company of cricketing legends such as Ben Stokes.
“It was a crazy experience,” Currie tells ESPNcricinfo. “It’s pretty mental, like social media just blows up over it. I’ve got a decent set of hands, and I prefer fielding on the boundary when I can get set more. I track the ball quite nicely, and quickly across the ground.”
But the pathway for Currie to professional cricket is far from the straight and narrow. A cricketer from Dorset with a healthy dose of Scottish blood in his veins, the journey to the international game was one of resilience and a steely determination not to be overcome by setbacks and a circuitous route. Currie’s unwavering commitment and relentless pursuit of his dream finally made him represent Scotland at the highest level. Now, as he gears up to don the Scotland colors in the next T20 World Cup, Currie enjoys and, to an extent, finds a reflection in his career within the Scotland cricketing journey. With such unique attributes of swing and accuracy, Currie plans to make gigantic ripples in the forthcoming big game, not minding the quality of opposition he will come up against.
“I’ve never worn a kilt shamefully,” he says.
“I don’t think I could pull it off, to be fair. We would holiday up to Scotland quite often as kids, and I’d be like, ‘You guys talk a bit funny, but you are pretty cool.’ We used to see Irn-Bru in the fridge, that sort of thing. But there’s a great amount of pride in it, and it was never a difficult decision to represent Scotland.” As he faces more formidable opponents such as England, Currie takes up the challenge with a freedom of spirit and determination.
With nothing to lose and everything to gain, Currie is well set to take up the opportunity and make his mark on the world stage—an epitome of the spirit of persevering and remaining resilient in a journey.
