BPL 2026 Draft Postponed Amid Franchise Restructuring Plans

The buzz around the BPL 2026 Draft will have to wait a little longer, as the Bangladesh Premier League’s governing body has officially postponed the event. The draft will not take place before October, confirming speculations about major changes underway behind the scenes. The delay follows the expiration of all previous BPL franchise agreements, which concluded with the last season.

As the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) navigates a major overhaul, preparations are being made to onboard new franchises through a structured five-year contract. BPL Governing Council Chairman Mahbub Anam revealed that fresh Expressions of Interest (EOIs) will be invited in August, followed by official franchise appointments in September. Only after this process is complete will the BPL 2026 Draft take place, tentatively scheduled for October.

BCB Eyes Global Standards for Franchise Model Ahead of BPL 2026 Draft

Speaking to the media, Mahbub explained, “We are hoping that in August we will be starting the process of taking in new franchises. In September, we have a schedule to appoint these new franchises… I believe the draft will not take place before October. If we can complete our schedules, then in October we can go for the draft.”

To modernize the league, the BCB also plans to hire a professional sports management company through a tender process. This firm will be tasked with shaping the tournament’s structure, financial model, and sustainability. “We are also studying how the different franchise tournaments are being run… They will give us direction,” Mahbub added.

Venue Audit & Future Roadmap

In a bid to expand the league’s footprint, the BCB will also conduct audits of venues like Bogura and Khulna. These grounds will be considered for the upcoming BPL season only if they meet the standards set in collaboration with the National Sports Council (NSC).

With new franchises lining up in August, event management overhauls in progress, and venue inspections underway, the BPL 2026 Draft now represents more than just player selection; it marks a fresh chapter in Bangladesh’s premier T20 competition.
