Former cricketer Sami Aslam recently revealed the reasons behind his decision to leave Pakistan and relocate to the United States (US). The 27-year-old, who had represented the Green shirts in 13 Tests and four ODIs, cited the lack of opportunities as the primary factor for his departure.
Speaking to Geo News, Sami expressed his frustration with the limited prospects available to him in Pakistan. However, he emphasized that he continues to pursue cricket in America. Reflecting on his decision, he admitted that he had doubts initially, but when presented with a promising opportunity, he couldn’t let it slip away. Moreover, Sami acknowledged the abundance of opportunities beyond cricket in the USA, which solidified his contentment with his choice.
Sami recounted his stellar performance in the domestic cricket scene, where he scored an impressive 900 runs with an average of 80. Such achievements often instill confidence in players, leading them to believe they are on the path to national team selection. Nevertheless, despite his exceptional form, Sami was left out of the squad that was announced after the COVID-19 pandemic. This exclusion shattered his hopes and made him question his future prospects. He realized that if he couldn’t secure a place in a 30-man squad, it was unlikely he would ever be selected again.
The cricketer admitted that it saddens him to think about the potential longevity of his service to Pakistan. He had aspired to represent his country for an extended period, but circumstances prevented that from happening. However, Sami maintained that life encompasses more than just cricket, indicating that he has found solace in other aspects of his existence.
Interestingly, Sami now resides in the Silicon Valley, California, the same location where influential figures like Tesla’s owner, Elon Musk, reside. This move showcases Sami’s pursuit of new avenues and opportunities outside the realm of cricket.
Beginning his career in 2015, Sami’s international appearances diminished after 2017. Despite the setback, he boasts an impressive record of 76 first-class matches, 80 list-A matches, and 34 T20 matches.
