About Major League Cricket (MLC):

Major League Cricket (MLC) is an upcoming professional Twenty20 cricket league in the United States. Sanctioned by USA Cricket and operated by American Cricket Enterprises (ACE), MLC is set to kick off on July 13, 2023. The league follows a single-entity model and features six teams representing major U.S. cities. It aims to bring the excitement of top-level cricket to American audiences, showcasing the talent and skill of players from around the world.

Cricket in the USA:

Cricket’s journey in the United States has seen several attempts to establish a Twenty20 (T20) cricket league. Previous ventures like Pro Cricket (2004) and the proposed American Premier League aimed to introduce domestic T20 competitions but were short-lived.

In January 2019, USA Cricket took over as the governing board, replacing the troubled USACA, which had been expelled from the International Cricket Council (ICC) due to governance issues. The new board aimed to popularize cricket beyond its niche status and attract mainstream attention.

In November 2018, USA Cricket announced its plans to launch a domestic T20 league by 2021, seeking partners to invest in the league and enhance cricketing infrastructure across the country. American Cricket Enterprises (ACE) secured a US$1 billion investment bid in May 2019, covering the league and benefiting the national teams. ACE’s partners included prominent figures from The Times Group and Willow TV.

The launch of Major League Cricket (MLC) was initially planned for 2021, alongside the introduction of the Minor League Cricket (MiLC) as a development league. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both leagues faced delays. In October 2020, USA Cricket confirmed its commitment to launching MLC in 2022 as part of its broader plan.

MLC made significant progress in 2022, with the announcement of MiLC Youth and successful fundraising rounds. In November 2022, MLC revealed that its inaugural season would take place from July 13 to July 30, 2023, at Grand Prairie Stadium, with six franchises participating.

The player draft for MLC’s first season was held in March 2023, with a serpentine system and specific rounds for U-23 players. The league faced initial challenges regarding sanctioning, but in April 2023, it received official approval from the ICC, clearing the path for its launch in July.

With a strong focus on building stadiums and top-notch facilities, MLC aims to accelerate the growth and development of cricket in the United States. The league holds immense potential to establish cricket as a popular sport among American audiences.
