South Australian Jake Fraser-McGurk has set a new world record with an astonishing performance at Karen Rolton Oval.
Fraser-McGurk smashed a 29-ball century in the Marsh One-Day Cup, the fastest white-ball ton ever scored. He eclipsed AB de Villiers’ previous record of 31 balls for the fastest one-day century.
It was also the fastest limited-overs ton scored in a professional match, and the quickest 50 by an Australian in 50-over cricket.
Fraser-McGurk hit 13 sixes and 10 fours in his innings of 125 from 38 deliveries. He was finally caught on the mid-wicket boundary off Beau Webster’s off-spin in the 12th over, but his innings had already laid a strong platform for his team.
Fraser-McGurk’s century marked his first in any professional format. He had crossed from Victoria to South Australia in the winter in pursuit of more opportunities, and his fourth game for his new state proved to be a memorable one.
The fact that Fraser-McGurk eclipsed Luke Ronchi’s previous benchmark for the fastest Australian domestic one-day ton (off 51 balls) by 22 deliveries underlines the scale of his feat.
Fraser-McGurk’s innings was a truly jaw-dropping display of hitting, and one that will be remembered for many years to come.
