Afghanistan’s cricket sensation, Rashid Khan, has joined the list of high-profile cricketers withdrawing from the upcoming BBL 2023, following in the footsteps of Melbourne Stars’ Harry Brook. Rashid, slated to play for Adelaide Strikers, is set to undergo a minor back surgery, compelling him to pull out of BBL 13.

The announcement was made by the Strikers in a statement on November 23, expressing the necessity for Rashid’s withdrawal due to the back injury that requires surgical intervention.

“Rashid has withdrawn from the upcoming BBL 13 due to a back injury which requires a minor operation,” Strikers said in a statement on Thursday (November 23).

With Rashid’s departure, the Strikers face the challenge of not having a replacement named yet. However, the franchise is committed to retaining Rashid for future seasons, acknowledging his significant contributions over the past seven years. Tim Neilsen, Adelaide Strikers’ General Manager of Cricket, expressed the team’s sentiment, acknowledging Rashid’s absence this summer and emphasizing his enduring popularity among fans.

“Rashid is a beloved member of the Strikers and a fan favourite who has been with us for seven years, so he will be extremely missed this summer,” said Tim Neilsen, Adelaide Strikers’ General Manager of cricket.

“Rashid loves Adelaide and the Strikers, and we know how much he loves playing in the BBL, and we support him as he has treatment for this injury to ensure his long-term involvement in the game.”

Rashid Khan, who has been a stalwart for the Strikers, has left an indelible mark in the BBL since 2017, having played 69 matches and claiming an impressive 98 wickets at an average of 17.51 and an economy rate of 6.44.

Despite the setback, the Strikers stand firmly behind Rashid, emphasizing their support for his journey through treatment to ensure his sustained involvement in the game. As the BBL season unfolds, the absence of Rashid Khan will undoubtedly be felt, underscoring the void created by the departure of a beloved and impactful player.
