The Adelaide Strikers have announced Matt Short as their new captain for the KFC BBL|13 season. This marks a significant moment for Short, who has risen through the ranks to become the sixth skipper of the Strikers’ men’s side.
Short’s recent accomplishments, including his Australia T20 and ODI debuts and his involvement with the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League, serve as testaments to his talent and leadership potential. Since joining the Strikers in 2018/19, he has established himself as a crucial player, most notably with his Player of the Tournament performance in BBL|12.
Short’s leadership qualities were evident during his stint as captain in several games last season, leaving a positive impression on the team and management. He expressed his enthusiasm for this new role:
“Adelaide and the Strikers have been my summer home for five years now. I love the city and the club, so to be named captain is a real honor. I enjoyed my taste of captaincy last season and I’m excited to fully embrace this challenge in BBL|13. We have a strong team this year, and I can’t wait to lead them to success, starting with our home opener against the Brisbane Heat on Saturday night.”
Head Coach Jason Gillespie shared his confidence in Short’s leadership abilities:
“Matt was a standout choice to take on the captaincy. We were very impressed with his leadership last year and believe he will excel in this role. We are excited to see him grow and flourish as our captain.”
This announcement comes after Short’s three-year contract extension with the Strikers earlier this year. The team’s BBL|13 campaign begins on Saturday night with a home fixture against the Brisbane Heat, marking the start of an exciting new chapter under the leadership of Matt Short.
