In a leadership shake-up for the Perth Scorchers in the ongoing Big Bash League 2023-24, all-rounder Aaron Hardie has been appointed as the stand-in captain. This decision comes in the wake of regular skipper Ashton Turner being ruled out for the season due to a meniscus tear sustained while bowling against the Hobart Hurricanes on December 20.
At just 24 years old, Hardie has already made a significant mark in Australian cricket, making his white-ball debut earlier this year. His stellar performance, including a match-winning knock of 85* off 45 balls against the Hobart Hurricanes, has earned him the trust and respect of his teammates.
Expressing his privilege and eagerness to lead the team in Turner’s absence, Hardie emphasized the squad’s unity and focus on securing the BBL title. Hardie, in acknowledging Turner as a fantastic captain and player, pledges to embrace the challenge and utilize the squad’s collective experience to enhance their performance.
“One of our great strengths is we’re comfortable using that experience and knowledge to make the team better as a collective. I’m sure the whole squad will remain focused and united to give us the best chance of winning another title,” Hardie said.
“First and foremost, we’re all wishing AT (Ashton Turner) a speedy recovery. He’s been a fantastic captain and player for a long time, and certainly somebody the squad looks up to. Personally, it’s a privilege to lead this team in his absence, and a challenge I’m keen to embrace,” Hardie was quoted as saying by Perth Scorchers.
“We have plenty of experience and leadership within the side. One of our great strengths is we’re comfortable using that experience and knowledge to make the team better as a collective. I’m sure the whole squad will remain focused and united to give us the best chance of winning another title,” he further added.
Hardie, a product of Western Australia and Perth Scorchers’ leadership programs, has the backing of his coach and teammates. Despite missing Turner’s captaincy, the team is confident in Hardie’s ability to lead with determination.
Head coach Adam Voges, while acknowledging the disappointment of losing Turner, sees this as an opportunity for Hardie to showcase his leadership skills. Head coach Voges assures ample support for Hardie from coaches, deputy captain Josh Inglis, and the experienced playing squad.
In closing, Voges expresses full confidence in the team rallying around Hardie, approaching the remainder of the season with intensity and focus to achieve success in the BBL 2023-24 campaign.
“Clearly losing AT is disappointing, but his injury presents an opportunity for Aaron to display his leadership skills during the tournament. We have long viewed Aaron as a leader of promise. He has been part of WA and Perth Scorchers leadership programs and certainly has the trust of his teammates, both on-field and off,” Voges was quoted as saying by Scorchers.
“He will have plenty of support from those around him – the coaches, vice-captain Josh Inglis, and the rest of a very experienced playing squad. We have full faith the group will rally around Aaron and attack the rest of the season with the same intensity and focus that has brought us success in recent years,” he concluded.
