The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mr Mohsin Naqvi, paid a visit to the players at the Kakul Camp on Monday. This visit comes as the 29 players, along with coaches, are undergoing rigorous training at the Army School of Physical Training in preparation for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand on home turf.
Naqvi, who recently assumed the role of PCB chairman, has brought forth some surprising developments in a short span. Notably, cricketers like Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim have rescinded their retirements and rejoined the Kakul Camp. Furthermore, there has been a significant change in leadership, with Babar Azam reinstated as the white-ball skipper, replacing Shaheen Shah Afridi in T20Is.
However, this sudden decision regarding the captaincy has reportedly stirred controversy, particularly with Shaheen, who expressed feeling ‘disrespected’ by the board’s decision. He raised concerns over the lack of justification and consideration for his removal and requested an urgent meeting with the PCB to address the situation, especially regarding purported false statements attributed to him concerning Babar’s appointment as captain.
Despite the speculation surrounding the captaincy saga, Naqvi’s visit to the Kakul Camp primarily focused on appreciating the players’ dedication to national commitment. The press release issued after the meeting made no mention of the ongoing controversy but emphasized Naqvi’s gratitude to the Pakistan Army for their support in enhancing the players’ fitness levels and discipline.
Additionally, Naqvi held a meeting with the selection committee to discuss team selections for the upcoming Pak vs NZ T20I series, as well as tours to Ireland and England, and the T20 World Cup 2024. In his statements, Naqvi reiterated PCB’s commitment to providing comprehensive support to players, ensuring they have the necessary tools and resources to excel on the international stage.
